To help our clients understand the process of web designing
I am listing below seven questions, the answers to which should be sought
by both clients and web designers, before starting the creation of a
website. This will initiate a natural flow of your web pages and the
visitors to the website will stay on it for a longer time than they
would in the normal course.
1. What is the purpose?
What do you want your website to do? Is it being created to entertain,
sell goods, provide information, report events or provide services?
Each of these will help dictate the design process. Entertainment implies
glitz and glamour. Hence such pages would be designed much differently
from pages that are created for reporting of information or for selling
of goods. Whatever the purpose of your site, it is important that it
should be recognized from the moment the home page of your website begins
to appear, creating the desired environment. Once you've determined
the goals for your website it will be easy to decide what type of design,
what level of quality and how much you're willing to spend on the project.
2. Who will be the Audience?
An important feature in effectively presenting ideas
and content is planning your site with your targeted audience in mind.
Who will be viewing the site? What will those people find useful and
interesting? What will be the average age of the visitors? Would the
majority have a high-speed connection or use modem access to the internet?
Decisions based on audience will affect many aspects of the web
designing process.
3. What are your competitor’s websites
like?
It is always important to see other websites in your industry. This
is done not with the intention of copying them but to find out what
they are doing wrong and what they are doing right. With that information
we will know exactly what to do to give your customers a wonderful
web site experience. Looking at other industry sites will also
help in understanding your market’s customers and their needs.
4. What will be the content of your website?
The content
of your website should be based on the fact that different people have
different ways of seeking information. Consider using a combination
of words, images, sound etc.
It is always better to use short descriptions with text linking to longer
information, giving the visitor the choice to browse - similar to the
way thumbnail sketches of images or photographs are linked to bigger,
more detailed images - allowing a user to make the choice as to whether
or not they care to wait for the download.
5. What should be the style of your website?
The text on your pages may give the user the information
he/she needs, but its design will keep him/her captivated. This will
also persuade him to come back again and again. Your personal touch
and the care you exercise in choosing graphics, colors, and layout,
in providing navigation aids are the elements which will bring your
web site to life. The concept of your organization should also affect
your design. Are you perceived as a dignified and formal or casual and
informal person? Is your organization seen as stable and reliable, or
innovative and dynamic? Each of the qualities you perceive should stimulate
the design process.
6. What is the secret of a successful website?
Anyone can build a web site. However, not everyone can help your
business grow. There is no single magic rule for designing a successful
website. The only way to be successful is to create a site focused
on the purpose of your website, your business needs, and what your
competitors’ are offering.
7. What questions should a web designer ask
before taking on a project?
A good web designer always asks the
prospective clients a lot of questions, not because he is intrusive,
but because he needs to understand the client’s business. This
is essential in order to be able to attend to his specific requirements.
The more he learns about the client’s business, the better he
can design an effective web strategy for him. He also asks the client
to put together a list of three sites that he really likes. These sites
enable the web designer to understand the taste of the client and can
design the site accordingly. The web designer should also ask questions
about the logo
of the client’s company. He can then integrate the colors and
theme of the graphics into the designing of the website. This will help
the people to remember and identify the website with the product/service
of the client.
